Weekly Words: 9th September 2017

Instead of focusing on news stories this week, I thought I would highlight some editorials/magazine covers that I have spotted and really loved. As I’ve said a zillion times before on here, I don’t love Kim Kardashian. However, she has been involved in two great photoshoots which have been released over the past couple of weeks that I feel would be a shame not to share. She is actually fairly versatile as a model so that’s one thing I will give her. Her Harper’s Bazaar Arabia shoot was to die for. I love the Cher inspiration and it is nice to see her channeling another Armenian icon. Kardashian herself is a huge fan of Cher, having posted various images of her as inspiration on her Instagram a few months back (and losing millions of followers whilst doing so), so it is cool to see her doing a shoot that you know she would’ve actually been really excited to participate in. The second shoot is the Interview cover which Kim shares with her daughter North (aka the cutest kid in North America). There has been some controversy over this shoot because Kim’s skin tone is a lot darker than what it is in real life (and the same shade as her daughter, which is impossible given that her daughter is half African-American and Kim is White & Armenian) and also because people think that Kim channeling Jackie Kennedy is in poor taste (apparently she is not classy enough to be a first lady, but I beg to differ given the current administration). However, the shoot is cute. It is a fun historical take on fashion, and it features Kim in styles that we wouldn’t normally expect from her. Finally, I wanted to show off the Bella Hadid covers for Vogue Brasil. Bella has broken a world record for being on the most Vogue covers in one month, formerly held by Doutzen Kroes. Out of all of the international editions of the magazine that she is featured on, I like the Brazilian cover the best. They are fun, retro, and give me serious Carla Bruni vibes. Now that I think about it, Bella can look like Carla in some photos. If nothing, looking like a true supermodel from the 80s is the highest compliment a model can receive.

The September Issues 2016

Now that we are finally in September, I’m going to showcase my personal favourites from fashion publications all around the globe. I decided to wait until August was over so I could look at all of the magazines that came out and judge them all instead of posting prematurely when we were still waiting on images being released. For example, Vogue Italia doesn’t come out until the very end of the month. Anyway, see this year’s picks below:

1 – W Magazine

Rihanna for W Magazine
Rihanna for W Magazine – Alternative Cover

Photographer: Steven Klein

Stylist: Edward Enninful

Make Up: Pat McGrath

This is badass. As soon as I seen it I was obsessed. I think I actually commented on Edward Enninful’s Instagram (and I never comment on famous people). So incredible. The lighting, the jewels, the regal pose. Rihanna is a better model than half of the models working today. She is truly an icon.

2 – Harper’s Bazaar USA

Kimye for Harper’s Bazaar

Photographer: Karl Lagerfeld

Stylist: Carine Roitfeld

Normally I hate Kimye as a couple, but recently I have come around to them. I actually don’t mind Kim anymore. She seems sweet. She won my support by sticking up for her husband against Taylor Swift. I always thought that Kanye just wanted to mould Kim into her perfect little doll and I found it odd but I think there is probably more to their relationship than that. Plus, they have the cutest kids. And finally, the interview is funny. That can excuse the lack of actual fashion on the cover (like, there is literally no jewellery even, how is this ok with the advertisers?).

3 – Vogue Australia

Selena Gomez for Vogue Australia

Photographer: Emma Summerton

Stylist: Sally Lyndley

I’m loving Selena Gomez in Louis Vuitton. I think her style evolution should be commended. I like the colours on this cover and I definitely think it will stand out amongst all of the other magazines on the shelf.

4 – InStyle USA

Kerry Washington for InStyle

Photographer: Thomas Whiteside

This cover has actually received quite a few negative comments online but I like it. For one, the font is great (very Woody Allen). Visually, the cover is so pretty and soft and the lipstick looks great. Plus it’s Kerry Washington and I love her.

5 – Vogue Russia

Irina Shayk for Vogue Russia

Photographer: Mert & Marcus

I actually think this is the hottest photo I’ve ever seen; Irina Shayk has undeniable sex appeal. The colourful masthead tones the cover down in a way, and I think that may be necessary. Plus, her hair looks amazing. I really like this.

And the rest…

I didn’t really like the cover of Vogue Paris but the editorial that accompanied it was actually very beautiful. Both Taylor Hill & Bella Hadid are stunning models. Also, I really liked the Back to Black editorial.

I didn’t hate the actual cover image of American Vogue but I didn’t like the casting, nor did I like the tagline used. I’m so bored of the whole focus being on social media (the same goes for VP’s Instagram Generation line). The jacket on the cover was pretty cool but I didn’t find the cover impressive. My pick would’ve been Winona Ryder. She’s beautiful, mature (and more appropriately aged given the actual readership of the magazine), and once again relevant due to Stranger Things on Netflix.

I was hoping for more from Vogue Italia, purely because I waited so long to see the cover. I’m not sure what I would’ve preferred but I just didn’t like the cover image. It isn’t something I’d stop and look at on the newsstand.

December’s Best Covers

December isn’t an important month in magazines. I suppose there are sometimes a few festive covers but apart from that it isn’t usually a stand-out edition. However, this year there are quite a few covers that I really liked so I thought I’d compile a list.

1 – Harper’s Bazaar Argentina

Mica Arganaraz’s cover is my favourite of the month. She looks so beautiful, as usual, and I like the colour of the background. I find it quite different and striking as a result.

2 – Vogue Italia

Gigi Hadid stars in a fun and colourful VI cover which actually has a fold-out. I feel like this is one that you would be instantly drawn to on a busy news stand.

3 – Vanity Fair

Bill Murray is an unlikely cover star for a fashion magazine, but Vanity Fair is more than that. I really think the content makes it worthwhile. To me, this is a Hollywood Christmas complete with humour. Life is a party, right?

4 – Vogue Germany

Liya Kebede is one of the most stunning models out there. She truly is beautiful. I liked this cover because it was quite dark and subdued. Also, the Balenciaga dress looks so good.

5 – British Vogue

Karlie Kloss reminded me of Natasha Poly in this shot. I like the backless dress and the colours are very Christmassy (is that a word?). It is also nice to see Karlie credited as something other than Taylor Swift’s friend.

Best of 2013 – Editorials continued

This post is a continuation of one posted a couple of days ago which you can read here. In that post I showcased work from British Vogue, Vogue Italia and Vogue Paris. These are the magazines I pay the most attention to. I also have a subscription to i-D magazine which I have decided I will not renew when the time comes because I am definitely not cool enough to be reading it. I have no idea who they talk about and my interest in discovering new music and art is minimal. Most of the time I see editorials posted on tumblr or instagram and subsequently look at them online to see them in full. Here are a final 5 which I have enjoyed this year.

“In The Mood” – March 2013

Model – Frida Aasen

Photographer – Jonas Bresnan

I personally think Frida Aasen should’ve hit the big time around the same time Daphne Groeneveld and Lindsey Wixson did. It disappoints me how her career still hasn’t taken off in the same way their’s did. She is a real life, flawless Barbie doll who I am continually rooting for to land a big campaign to get her on the model-map. I am going to include the editorial in full because it truly is wonderful.
